Background and Inspiration

I am Sagesh Poonan, an artist born in the vibrant enclave of Lenasia, situated to the south of Johannesburg. My upbringing was steeped in the rich influence of musicians and creatives, a legacy passed down through my family. With my father, grandmother, and uncles as musicians and artists, my world was an artistic tapestry from the very beginning.

Education and Artistic Journey

My formal artistic journey began at the National School of the Arts, where I honed my skills in the realm of fine art. This foundation served as a steppingstone to further exploration and growth. Venturing into the realm of visual communication, I earned my diploma in Graphic Design from Bostan Media House. This fusion of artistic dimensions has shaped my unique approach to creativity.

Aesthetic and Expression

My artistic creations are a synthesis of the mythical and the authentic. Throughout my journey, I've found inspiration in the world of black and white photography, drawn to its stark elegance. The intricate complexities of human anatomy have captivated me, and I've utilized light and shadow to craft nearly abstract forms. In my drawings, I uncover an avenue to explore my inner creativity, a sanctuary from the relentless pace of modern life.

Mediums and Techniques

Working across a range of mediums—pencil, watercolour, and charcoal—I breathe life into my visions. My work is an interplay of dark and light, symbolizing a profound sense of tranquillity and serenity. With every stroke and shade, I encapsulate the dance between these opposing forces, drawing viewers into a world where emotion and imagination intertwine.
